The project site is located 50km downstream of the Kiambere Hydro Power Station along the River Tana in Tharaka Nithi and Kitui Counties, Eastern Province.
The main objective of the High Grand Falls Project is to provide a large-Scale Multi-Purpose Water Reservoir catering for Public water Supply, Irrigation, River Regulation, Flood Control and Power Production in order to effectively contribute to the regional and national social-economic development.
The project has a reservoir storage capacity of 5.4 billion cubic metres and is to generate 700MW of power. It will provide huge benefits which include opening up huge areas for irrigation and proving fresh water supply for proposed Lamu Port through a intra and inter Basin water transfer canals.
Feasibility Study, detailed designs and tender documentation have been completed by Egis Bceom International Consultant hired by MoRDA and submitted to MORDA in April 201.The cost estimate is US$ 1.5 billion.
